How to Take Care of Your Indian Silk Saree: Do's and Don'ts? Published Dec 05th, 2023

From traditional reverence to casual existence of glamor, Indian Silk sarees are a true embodiment of grace, culture, and Indian craftsmanship. Here’s why.

Indian silk saree is more than just fancy clothes; they carry stories and meaning in every thread. Think of them like special fabric that hug you with tradition, art, and a touch of timeless charm.

Art on Fabric

The pretty designs on Indian silk saree aren't just there to look nice. They're like a secret language between the artist and the cloth, showing the effort and love put into creating something beautiful.

Strong Like Silk

Silk is strong, just like people who face tough times but come out stronger. A silk saree isn't just shiny; it's a reminder to stand tall, no matter what life throws your way.

Caring for an Indian silk saree is an art that combines tradition and practicality. As a professional in culturally specific fashion, particularly Indian fashion, we understand the value and delicacy of silk sarees. These garments are not just pieces of clothing but are often heirlooms that carry cultural significance and personal memories.

Here's a comprehensive guide to ensure your silk saree remains as timeless as its heritage.

Understanding Silk Sarees

Silk sarees are made from natural silk fibers, known for their sheen, strength, and delicate texture. They often feature intricate designs, sometimes with gold or silver threads (zari), making them both valuable and delicate.

Do's for Silk Saree Care

  1. Proper Storage: Always store silk sarees in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Use a muslin cloth or pure cotton covers to wrap the saree, as these materials allow the fabric to breathe and prevent discoloration.

  2. Regular Refolding: Refold silk sarees every three months to avoid tearing or weakening of the fabric along the creases. This practice also prevents the zari from breaking.

  3. Gentle Cleaning: For regular cleaning, airing the saree in a shaded area is often enough. If it requires washing, opt for a mild detergent and cold water. Avoid wringing the saree; gently squeeze out excess water.

  4. Dry Cleaning for Heavy Sarees: Sarees with heavy work or zari should ideally be dry-cleaned, as this is the safest way to clean without damaging the fabric or embellishments.

  5. Ironing with Care: Use a low to medium heat setting while ironing. It's advisable to place a cotton cloth between the saree and the iron to avoid direct contact with heat.

  6. Using Perfumes and Deodorants Wisely: Apply perfumes and deodorants before draping the saree. Direct application on the silk can cause stains and damage to the fabric.

Don'ts for Silk Saree Care

  1. Avoiding Water Stains: Never try to remove a stain with water, as this can spread it. Instead, blot the area gently and seek professional cleaning if necessary.

  2. Steering Clear of Harsh Chemicals: Avoid using bleach or other harsh chemicals, as They can damage the silk fibers and fade the colors.

  3. Not Hanging forLong Durations: Avoid hanging silk sarees for extended periods, as the weight of the saree can cause the fabric to stretch and lose its shape.

  4. Refraining from Tight Folding: Do not fold sarees too tightly, especially those with zari work, as this can lead to the zari breaking and the fabric tearing along the folds.

  5. Avoiding Direct Sunlight: Never dry silk sarees in direct sunlight, as the UV rays can fade the colors and weaken the fabric.

Additional Tips

  • In case of a spill, gently dab the spot with a soft, dry cloth and get it cleaned professionally.

  • For long-term storage, use silica gel packets to prevent moisture build-up.

  • Never store silk sarees with other materials like georgette or chiffon, as they might catch color from the silk sarees.By following these guidelines, your silk saree will maintain its beauty and elegance for years to come, becoming a cherished piece of your wardrobe that reflects the rich tradition of Indian fashion.

Always store silk sarees in a cool, dry place, away from sunlight, ideally wrapped in a soft muslin cloth. This practice protects them from dust, moisture, and color fading. Hand washing in cold water with a mild detergent is recommended when it comes to cleaning.

Be gentle and avoid wringing or twisting the saree, which can damage the fibers. After washing, gently squeeze out excess water instead of wringing, and roll the saree in a clean, dry towel to absorb moisture. Lay it flat for drying rather than hanging it to maintain its shape.

Ironing silk sarees requires caution. Use a low heat setting and place a pressing cloth between the iron and the saree to avoid direct heat. Regular maintenance, like airing out the saree and refolding it every few months helps keep it fresh, and prevents damage along the creases. There are also specific practices to avoid. Never use bleach or harsh chemicals on silk, as these can cause irreparable damage and discoloration. Silk sarees should never be exposed to direct sunlight for drying, as this leads to fading.

Also, avoid storing them in plastic, which can cause yellowing and moisture accumulation, damaging the fabric. Machine washing and drying are too harsh for the delicate silk fibers and can lead to damage and shrinkage. Handle the saree gently during washing to prevent any rough damage to the fabric.
