Well, it’s been quite a few days we are quarantined and following the stay-at-home orders from the government authorities to keep ourselves safe from the coronavirus outbreak. Meanwhile, shopping for groceries is just inevitable for us and we need to follow certain precautions while venturing out for groceries.
We urge people to stay at homes and order groceries or toiletries from online shops whenever possible.
A few people have questioned us on how to sanitize groceries or how to disinfect groceries during the pandemic and we have consulted them according to our knowledge gained from trusted sources like Centres for Disease Control and The Food and Drug Administration.
These organizations are working on a war footing to contain the virus and they have mentioned that the grocery shopping today is not like the normal chore for all, you need to take special precautionary measures to keep yourself safe.
As per the FDA’s website, “The virus is thought to spread mainly from person to person. Foodborne exposure to this virus is not known to be a route of transmission.”
Well as the research suggests so, you need to focus while and during the grocery hunt and maintain the regular social distancing guidelines while buying them at the store, but to make sure you are safe thoroughly, you might follow the guidelines below…
How to sanitize groceries?
1. Wash the things
After you return to home buying groceries, it’s time to wash and clean the things with you. First, wash your hands with soap for 20 seconds. You can try singing a song to count the time. Empty your bags in a clean area and dump those bags in the trash if they are disposable. If you are using bags made out of fabric, soak them in soap water in a bucket. Leave your shoes outdoors. Well, this tip is necessary if you have brought groceries from the store itself. For online shopping, read the next one.
2. Clean the boxes
If you have groceries and toiletries in boxes, dispose of them off in trash immediately, you don’t need to keep them along with the actual item at home. The virus is known to stay on certain surfaces for around 72 hours.
DO NOT WASH FRESH VEGETABLES OR MEAT OR ANYTHING NATURAL PRODUCE WITH SOAP OR ANY ALCOHOL BASED HAND RUB OR SANITIZER. YOU DON’T WANT SOAP OR SANITIZER TO ENTER YOUR STOMACH AND GIVE YOU NAUSEA OR DIARRHEA.
3. Use Disposable Gloves if available
While handling and storing groceries & toiletries, use disposable hand gloves made out of latex if available. This will keep your hands clean in between. Do not touch your face, ears, and mouth in between this task.
That’s it.
You can even try spraying and cleaning the packed items before storing them but never spray anything on fresh produce, instead of clean your fruits, vegetables and meat with fresh water for a few seconds before storing them.
